Bengaluru (Bangalore), India

Updated: Jul 7, 2018

Bengaluru, also known as Bangalore, is the capital city of the south Indian state of Karnataka. Here’s a few tidbits of information about the city I'll be studying in this summer:

  • Nickname: “Silicon Valley of India” or “IT capital of India”

  • Official language: Kannada

  • Population: approximately 8.5 million

  • Religious Demographics: 78.9% Hindu, 13.9% Muslim, 5.6% Christian, and 1.0% Jain

  • Elevation: 3,020 ft.

  • Climate: Tropical savanna with average annual temperatures between 66 ºF and 85 ºF. April is the hottest month, January is the coldest month, and September is the rainiest month.

  • History: Evidence of human civilization in the Bengaluru region dates back to 4,000 B.C.E. However, the city was officially established in 1537 by Kempe Gowda I.
